Why Is My Refrigerator Making Noise?

Refrigerators aren't silent, but a new or unusual sound is worth paying attention to — different noises often point to different components.

A buzzing or humming sound is often normal compressor operation, but a louder or more constant hum can indicate the compressor is struggling.

A clicking sound repeated every few minutes can be the compressor's start relay attempting (and failing) to start the compressor.

A rattling noise is sometimes as simple as a loose item on top of the fridge or inside, but can also mean a fan blade is hitting frost buildup or debris.

A high-pitched squeal often points to the evaporator or condenser fan motor, which may need lubrication or replacement.

A dripping or gurgling sound is usually just normal refrigerant movement or defrost water draining, and typically isn't a cause for concern on its own.

If a noise is new, getting louder, or paired with the refrigerator not cooling properly, it's worth having it checked before a minor issue turns into a bigger repair.
