Why Is My Washer Not Spinning?

When a washer fills and washes normally but won't spin at the end of the cycle, the cause is usually mechanical rather than electrical.

A worn drive belt. On many top-load washers, a belt connects the motor to the drum. If it's worn, slipped, or broken, the drum won't spin even though the motor is running.

A failed lid switch. Most washers won't spin at all unless the lid switch confirms the lid is closed. A failed switch can prevent spinning even when the lid is shut properly.

A worn motor coupler. On many direct-drive washers, a small coupler connects the motor to the transmission and is designed to fail before the motor does, protecting more expensive components — but it does need replacing when it goes.

An unbalanced load. Modern washers detect imbalance and will refuse to spin at full speed (or at all) until the load is redistributed, which can look like a mechanical failure but isn't.

Before assuming a part has failed, it's worth redistributing the load and running the spin cycle again — if the problem persists across multiple loads, it's likely a component that needs attention.
