Why Is My Dryer Not Heating?

A dryer that tumbles normally but doesn't produce heat is a frustrating but usually fixable problem. Here's what typically causes it.

A failed heating element (electric dryers). The heating element is the part that actually warms the air moving through the drum. When it burns out, the dryer will run and tumble clothes, just without any heat.

A blown thermal fuse. This safety component cuts power to the heating circuit if the dryer overheats, often due to restricted airflow from a clogged vent. Once blown, it needs to be replaced — and the underlying airflow issue should be addressed too, or it will blow again.

Igniter or gas valve issues (gas dryers). On gas dryers, a failed igniter or gas valve solenoid can prevent the burner from lighting even though the drum still turns.

A faulty thermostat. If the thermostat that regulates drum temperature fails, the dryer may shut off the heat prematurely or never turn it on.

Because a blown thermal fuse is so often caused by a clogged vent, it's worth having your vent line checked at the same time as any heating repair — otherwise the new part may fail again.
