Why Is My Ice Maker Not Making Ice?

An ice maker that stops working while the rest of the refrigerator runs perfectly fine is one of the most common standalone appliance complaints we hear.

A frozen or clogged fill tube. The small tube that supplies water to the ice mold can freeze shut, especially if the freezer temperature fluctuates.

A failed water inlet valve. This valve controls water flow from your home's supply line into the ice maker, and when it fails, no water reaches the mold at all.

A freezer that's running too warm. Ice makers typically need the freezer at or below roughly 0-10°F to freeze properly, so a freezer that's not quite cold enough can prevent ice formation even if everything else works.

A faulty ice maker module. The module itself controls the fill, freeze, and harvest cycle, and can fail independently of the rest of the refrigerator.

If the freezer is cold enough and the water supply is confirmed on, the ice maker module or inlet valve is the next most likely place to look — both are serviceable components rather than a sign you need a new refrigerator.
