Should You Repair or Replace an Appliance?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on a few factors rather than a single rule.
Age of the appliance. Most major appliances are built to last somewhere in the range of 10 to 15 years, though this varies a lot by type and brand. An appliance well past that range is more likely to have other parts nearing the end of their life too.
What's actually broken. A control board or door seal replacement on an otherwise healthy appliance is a very different decision than a compressor failure on an aging refrigerator.
How the appliance has performed overall. If this is the first real issue in many years of reliable use, a repair is often the more practical choice. If it's the second or third repair in a short span, that's worth factoring in.
Getting an actual diagnosis first. It's hard to make a good repair-or-replace decision without knowing exactly what's wrong and what fixing it involves — a proper diagnosis gives you the information to decide, rather than guessing.
There's no universal answer that fits every situation, which is why we focus on giving you an honest, specific diagnosis so you can make the call that makes sense for your household.
