About GE Refrigerator Repair
GE makes French-door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer and built-in refrigerators, including the Profile and Café lines and Monogram built-in refrigeration. A warm GE refrigerator can come from a fan, the defrost system, a sensor, the control board or the sealed system, so we find which one before replacing a major part, and we don't assume the compressor is the problem.
We repair GE refrigerators in your home, protecting your floors and cabinetry, and explain what we find and what the repair will cost before any work begins. For how we approach every brand, see refrigerator repair in Houston, and for other GE appliances see GE appliance repair.
Common GE refrigerator problems
- GE refrigerator not cooling
- Freezer cold but refrigerator warm
- Frost buildup or a defrost problem
- Fan noise or a fan that has stopped
- Compressor or sealed-system concerns
- Leaking water
- Ice maker not making ice
GE Refrigerators We Repair
From French-door models to built-in units, we repair GE refrigerators in Houston homes. Tell us the model number when you call and we'll plan the visit around your kitchen.
GE Refrigerator Models We Repair
Each type is built a little differently, so the model number helps us plan the diagnosis.
French-door refrigerators
Two doors above and a freezer drawer below. Cold air is usually moved from the freezer side by a fan, so a fan, defrost or sensor fault can warm the fresh-food side while the freezer stays cold.
Side-by-side refrigerators
Fresh-food and freezer sections sit next to each other, often with water and ice in the door. Warm temperatures, frost buildup, control board faults and ice maker problems are all things we diagnose on them.
Bottom-freezer refrigerators
The freezer is a drawer under the fresh-food section. A cooling problem still comes down to airflow, the defrost system, sensors, the board or the sealed system.
Built-in refrigerators
Built-in and column units sit flush with the cabinetry, so we plan access and protect your floors and cabinets before anything is pulled out. We replaced a compressor and evaporator on a GE built-in; it is shown below.
GE Profile and Café
Profile and Café models often add electronic controls, dispensers and connected features, so the board, sensors and display are part of the diagnosis along with the fans and defrost system.
GE Monogram refrigeration
We also repair Monogram built-in refrigeration, with the same careful, diagnosis-first approach. Tell us the model when you call.
GE Refrigerator Problems We Diagnose and Repair in Houston
Here is what each GE refrigerator problem usually involves and what we check first.
GE refrigerator not cooling
A warm GE refrigerator is checked from the simple causes toward the involved ones: power and door seals, a dirty condenser coil, the fans, then the defrost system, the sensors and the control board. The compressor and sealed system come last, once the others are ruled out. See refrigerator not cooling for checks you can safely do first.
Freezer cold but refrigerator warm
When the freezer stays cold and the fresh-food side warms up, the cold air usually isn't reaching it: an evaporator fan that has stopped, a frost-blocked air path or a defrost fault. If it is the freezer that is warm, see freezer repair.
Frost buildup and defrost-system problems
Heavy frost on the freezer back panel or around the vents often points to a defrost heater, sensor or control that has stopped working, or a door that isn't sealing. We test the defrost parts rather than just clearing the ice.
Evaporator fan problems
The evaporator fan moves cold air from the freezer coil through the refrigerator. A fan that is noisy, slow or stopped can leave the fresh-food side warm while the freezer stays cold.
Condenser fan problems
The condenser fan helps cool the compressor and the condenser coil. A fan that has failed or is clogged with dust makes the sealed system work harder, and the refrigerator can run warm.
Control board and sensor problems
A temperature sensor or the control board tells the fans and compressor when to run. A fault in either can cause warm temperatures, dead interior lights or a flashing or blank display. We check power, connections and sensors first; a GE side-by-side whose board we replaced is shown below.
Compressor or sealed-system concerns
A compressor that won't start or run, or a refrigerant leak elsewhere in the sealed system, is the most involved repair. It is only one possible cause of a warm GE refrigerator, so we confirm it before recommending it.
Leaking water
Water inside or under the refrigerator is often a clogged defrost drain, a water inlet valve or water line problem, or the ice maker. See refrigerator leaking.
Ice maker not making ice
No ice is often a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, an ice maker module fault or a freezer that is too warm. See ice maker repair for how we approach it.
Unusual refrigerator noises
A new buzz, rattle, grind or click often comes from a fan, the ice maker or a compressor mount, and where the sound comes from tells us where to look. See refrigerator making noise.

A warm refrigerator can come from the fans, the defrost system, the electronics or the sealed system, so we work from the simple causes toward the involved ones.
Tell us the model and the symptom
Warm, frosting up, leaking or noisy? The model number is on a label inside the refrigerator and helps us plan the visit.
Fans, coils and seals
We check the condenser coil and fan, the evaporator fan and the door seals.
Defrost, sensors and board
We test the defrost system, the temperature sensors and the control board before the compressor is considered.
Cause first, then the repair
We confirm the cause, including whether the compressor or sealed system is involved, and explain the repair and its cost before any work begins.
Is a GE Refrigerator Compressor Always the Problem?
No. Compressor failure is only one possible cause of a GE refrigerator that isn't cooling, so we rule out the simpler causes first.
The compressor isn't the only suspect
A fan, a defrost fault, a bad sensor or a failed control board can each look like a failing compressor. We test those first, because a new compressor won't fix a problem it didn't cause.
When the compressor is the cause
A compressor that never starts, runs without cooling or has failed can need sealed-system service. We explain what we found, the options and the cost before that work begins. See refrigerator compressor repair for how the repair works. Sealed-system work involves refrigerant, so it is not a DIY repair.
Built-in and column units
On a built-in, the compressor and sealed-system parts may be reached from the top or the back of the unit, so we plan access around your cabinetry and protect your floors first.

GE Refrigerator Repair FAQ
A warm GE refrigerator can come from a dirty condenser coil, a failed condenser or evaporator fan, a defrost problem, a faulty temperature sensor, the control board, or the compressor or sealed system. We test the simpler causes first and tell you plainly if the sealed system is involved.
That usually means cold air isn't reaching the fresh-food side. An evaporator fan that has stopped, a frost-blocked air path or a defrost fault are the usual suspects, and a sensor or the board can also be involved. We find which one before replacing anything.
Yes. Profile and Café models often add electronic controls and dispensers, so we check the board, sensors and display along with the fans and defrost system. We also repair GE Monogram built-in refrigeration. Tell us the model number when you call.
Yes. We have replaced compressors on GE refrigerators that had stopped cooling. Compressor and sealed-system repair is the most involved refrigerator repair, so we confirm the compressor is the real cause first, then explain the repair and its cost before any work begins.
A frozen or clogged fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, an ice maker module fault or a freezer that is too warm to freeze the ice are the usual causes. We test the water supply, the valve and the freezer temperature to find which.
It depends on the refrigerator's age, its overall condition and what the repair costs. We diagnose first and explain the repair and its cost before any work begins, so you can compare it with replacement. Our repair-or-replace guide explains how we think about it.
